MobileDemand xTablet T1110

Budget-friendly, well-conceived 10-inch rugged thin & light Windows tablet from one of the platform's leaders and early pioneers
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

MobileDemand, a pioneering provider of rugged tablets, cases, and mobile all-in-one computing solutions for enterprise productivity, announced the xTablet T1110 April 2023 as a value-priced, thin and lightweight addition to its line of Windows-based rugged tablets. Designed to be directly paired with a myriad of popular payment systems, the xTablet T1110 is targeted at applications such as line-busting, drive-thru ordering, store operations and controls and inventory management.

Where does this tablet fit in? Over the years, MobileDemand has had rugged tablet lineups with both smaller and larger models than is the case now. Today, the company sees their customer sweet spot in the 10-inch form factor, the same that Steve Jobs recognized as the optimal tablet size when the iPad was introduced, a size that's not too small and not too big.

As of December 2023, MobileDemand customers have their choice of no fewer than five rugged tablets with 10-inch screens, each fine-tuned towards specific vertical market customer needs and deployments. The table below shows the major specs of the quintet:

In essence, it boils down to the T1110 and the T1190 being thin and light tablets, and the T1180 and T1185 heavier-duty versions. Of the latter two, the T1185, though nominally equipped with a lower-level processor than the T1180, seems in most respects the successor of the older T1180. Of the two "thin and light" models, the T1110 represents the budget-friendly option with a lower resolution display, whereas the T1190 comes optimized for point-of-sale and data collection deployments. All four are plenty rugged, with the lighter versions pretty much matching the heavier-duty models in ruggedness specs. And then there's the latest addition, the xTablet T1175 that elevates the T11xx line's performance into the highest level. We mention all this because MobileDemand went to considerable length to offer the exact right 10-inch tablet for pretty much every conceivable deployment.

But now let's take a closer look at the xTablet T1110. The image below shows the tablet from the front and all four sides. Note how slender it is and how it has enough of a margin around the screen so you can hold it in your hands without inadvertently triggering a touch action (a huge problem with zero margin consumer phones and tablets!):

The T1110 very much follows MobileDemand's form-follows-function design language — everything must make sense. Corner bumpers, for example, are screwed on rather than part of the housing. This way they can be replaced, or they can be removed if they are not needed. And MobileDemand might even have bigger ones available for extra protection. Ports are all on one side so that peripheral cables don't stick out all over the place.

Below is a closeup of the ports on the left side of the tablet, with port covers removed for best view. From left to right there are a standard 3.5mm audio jack, a Micro SD card reader, a reversible USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C connector that can be used to connect to an external monitor via DisplayPort and also for downstream charging (up to 10 watts), a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A port, and a second USB Type-C port. The latter is USB 3.0 Gen 1 and is used for charging the T1110 via the supplied power adapter (there is no conventional power jack).

The bottom side of the tablet has a docking connector and two holes to stabilize/lock the tablet in the optional office or vehicle dock. On the right side is a Kensington-standard lock hole for use with a security cable. On the top are physical volume up/down buttons. On the back are dual speakers, the rear camera, a function button placed so it can be operated with the left thumb, and the cover for the battery compartment.

The battery compartment cover has a rubber seal and is secured with a number of small screws. The T1110's thin (3/16th inch) 43 watt-hour Li-Polymer battery itself is screwed onto the interior frame of the tablet with another half dozen small screws, so we're talking replaceable battery, but not the kind that you can quickly hot-swap during use. MobileDemand specs show up to 12 hours battery life on a charge. In the strenuous always-on PCMark10 battery test in our lab, the T1110 managed a very respectable 7:11 hours.

As for construction, the T1110's is black polycarbonate plastic. Unlike the other T11xx models, the T1110 doesn't have an internal magnesium frame.

Technology

The xTablet T1110 runs Windows 11 Professional (Windows 11 IoT Enterprise is also available, as is an optional downgrade to Windows 10 Pro) on an Intel "Elkhart Lake" Pentium N6415 processor that's based on the Intel Atom CPU architecture. This is the same chip that's in the higher-end T1185.

The system has 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM on board. Mass storage uses fast M.2 PCI3 Gen 3 solid state disk, although the manual says it uses (slower) EMMC storage. In our benchmark testing, T1110 storage was at least as fast as the PCIe-equipped T1185, so PCIe it probably is.

The T1110 has quick Intel AX200 WiFi6 wireless LAN, Bluetooth 5.2, and UBlox M8N/M9N positioning. There is no mobile broadband option.

Cameras provide up to 8mp images/video, auto-focus and flash in the rear, and 2mp in the front.

Surprisingly tough and rugged

Despite its low weight and slender profile, the xTablet T1110 is plenty tough enough to reliably perform on the job and handle the daily grind.

Getting dropped is the most common reason why consumer tech breaks and fails. With a stellar 5-foot drop spec, that should not be an issue with the T1110. MobileDemand offers an optional, and highly recommended, very tough screen protector that keeps the screen from shattering. With the screen protector, the display can withstand dropping a 9-ounce steel ball on it from half a meter distance.

The tablet is IP65 sealed, which means totally dustproof and able to handle low-pressure water jets from all directions.

The only major ruggedness spec where the budget-friendly T1110 scores lower than the four higher-end T11xx tablets is the operating temperature range; its low-end limit is listed as 32F instead of 14F like the others, but we really can't see why the T1110 shouldn't be able to operate down to 14F as well.

Summary: the MobileDemand xTablet T1110

What MobileDemand offers with the 10-inch T1110 is a budget-friendly, remarkably rugged tablet computer that punches well above its (light) weight. The xTablet T1110 is quick, responsive, very handy and can easily be customized for any number of jobs and deployments in point-of-sale, line-busting, inventory management, retail, restaurants and any number of other data collection and service applications. -- C.
