Arbor Technology Gladius G0710

Atom-powered ultra-mobile rugged Tablet PC
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

ARBOR Technology is a Taiwan-based ISO-9001 certified embedded and networking manufacturer founded in 1993.

The ARBOR Gladius G0710 is a compact tablet computer with wide application potential in areas that benefit from data collection, documentation and communication capabilities. The device measures 8.3 x 6.3 inches, is just under an inch and a half thick, and weighs only a pound. It has a 7-inch wide-format analog resistive touch display with netbook-style 1024 x 600 pixel resolution. The display is considered outdoor-viewable with a fairly strong 375 nits LED backlight.

Unlike the Gladius G0720 with its thumb-type keyboard, the G0710 is designed for operation via its touch screen. There are, however, eight programmable function buttons that can be assigned to fit intended applications.

The Gladius is based on the very power-efficient Intel Atom Z510 processor with its accompanying Intel System Controller Hub US15W. There's 1GB of DDR2 RAM on the system board, and the standard configuration cmes with 4GB of industrial Compact Flash. A 60GB 1.8-inch PATA hard disk is optional.

The Gladius G0710 has an integrated ISO 15693/14443A/14443B RFID reader, a 1.3mp front-facing camera and a 2-mp rear-facing camera. On the communications side, you get integrated 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth version 2.0 with EDR (extended data range), and optional 3.75G HSUPA WWAN (there's a SIM slot). There are two onboard USB 2.0 ports, a serial RS232 port, as well as a gigabit RJ45 Ethernet jack.

Thanks to the low-power Atom chip, the Gladius is a fanless design. Its Li-Ion battery pack provides about four hours of running time.

The G0710 is a fairly rugged device. It is sealed to IP54 specifications, where the "5" means it is mostly dustproof and the "4" that it is protected against water sprayed from all directions. The device can handle a four foot drop to wood, and the temperature range is 32 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit.

ARBOR offers the Gladius G0710 in an industrial (shown) and a medical version that is EN60601-1/EN60601-1-2/UL60601-1 certified. The device is exceptionally small and light, fitting almost anywhere.
