Psion 7535 G2

Latest version of an ultra-rugged flashlight-style handheld
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

The 7535 G2, originally introduced back in 2007 as a compact, lightweight, rugged handheld computer designed to strike a balance between (then) state-of-the-art performance and durability in demanding environments.

The stated purpose of the 7535 G2 was to serve as a tough and powerful tool for warehouse operations, one that would never fail no matter how frantic things became. Apparently, the device lived up to its job and then some, as it remains available, with additional updates, even in 2013 after Psion's acquisition by Motorola Solutions. Talk about longevity.

Technologically, not much changed in the 7535 over the years. The device still runs Windows CE 5.0 on a 520MHz version of the Marvell PXA270 processor, it still has 128MG of RAM and 64MB of Flash, it has Bluetooth, your choice of CF Card-based single or dual band WiFi (802.11b/g or a/b/g), and a number of additional options, including various scanners and even RFID.

Generally, you'd expect a "7535" model to offer more than a "7530" model, but in the case of this Psion, 7535 more is a bit less, as in little less size and quite a bit less weight than the invincible but rather large 7530 G2. The 7535 G2 looks almost the same, but weighs 1.4 pounds instead of 2.1 pounds and is smaller in every dimension.

The 7535 G2 is also missing a PC Card slot and expansion goes through a SD and a CF card slot. The device is slightly less rugged in most environmental standards (though still plenty tough). There were very few compromises on the technology side: the 7535 uses the same 520MHz PXA270 processor and can be equipped with the same RAM and flash storage. The transflective color display is the same as well. Keyboard and expansion options slightly differ.
