DT Research DT370CR

Compact, handy, multifunctional rugged 7-inch tablet available with Windows 10 IoT Enterprise or Android
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

There are times when even the biggest smartphone isn't quite big enough, certainly not rugged enough, and you need Windows 10. That's what DT Research made the DT370CR for. It was introduced late 2018 as a sleek, military-grade multi-purpose tablet with a 7-inch sunlight-readable display. Oh, and it also comes in an Android version.

Why both Windows and Android? To offer companies the opportunity to standardize on a multifunctional device that can be used across different environments within an organization, says Daw Tsai Sc.D., who is president of DT Research. He also said that "a 7-inch display hits the readability sweet spot for a variety of workers indoor and outdoor through a high-bright and anti-reflective screen with capacitive touch."

As is, you can actually get 7-inch smartphones now, but screen size is where the similarity to this new DT Research tablet ends. The DT370CR is larger, thicker and much heavier than a sliver-thin phone, and much tougher. It also offers on-the-job functionality and versatility that phones don't even come close to. Features include:

  • A GNSS receiver that can use real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning for greatly increased location accuracy. Users can create 3D Point Clouds with centimeter-level accuracy, as required by tasks such as forensic mapping, collision reconstruction, land surveying, e-construction and building information modeling.

  • A high-bright (800 nits) sunlight readable and anti-reflective display with capacitive touch.

  • An industrial-grade 2D barcode scanner that can also read 1D codes.

  • Integrated WLAN, long range (1,000 ft) Bluetooth and 4G LTE/AWS Mobile Broadband deliver seamless information capture and transmission.

The fanless DT370CR is powered by a 1.44GHz quad-core Intel "Cherry Trail" Atom X5-Z8350 processor based on 14nm process technology and with Broadwell-architecture Intel HD Graphics. This means USB 3.0 and also burst frequencies up to 1.92GHz. There's 4GB of RAM and 128GB of Flash storage, which can be complemented via a micro SD Card slot. WLAN is at the 802.11ac level and there's Level 1 Bluetooth 4.0 LE, the kind that can transmit within a 1,000 feet range.

Measuring 8.5 x 5.4 inches, the DT370CR has a compact footprint for a rugged tablet. It's an inch thick and weighs two pounds. The functionally designed ABS+PC polymer body with corner rubber bumpers is grippy and easy to hold and operate. Four programmable function buttons and a navigation diamond complement the capacitive multi-touch display.

On the ruggedness side, the DT370CR is as tough as it needs to be for its intended deployments. Ingress protection is at the IP65 level, which means it's fully dust-proof and can handle low-pressure water jets from all directions. The standard operating temperature range is 32 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. Shock and vibration testing was performed to MIL-STD-810G procedures.

Overall, the DT370CR nicely fills the need for a small, tough tablet computer available with either Windows 10 IoT Enterprise or Android 8.1, one with a display large and bright enough for work in the field, and enough integrated and optional functionality for just about any job. -- Conrad Blickenstorfer, January 2019
