DAP Technologies MicroFlex CE8640X and CE8640B
Rugged keypad handheld PC (by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)
Like other DAP Technologies models, the CE8640 series is available both with the older 400MHz PXA255 processor running Windows CE .NET 4.2 and the newer 520MHz PXA270 processor running Windows CE 5.0. The older model has two PC Card Type II slots whereas the newer one has a single PC Card slot and a SD card slot.
The MicroFlex 8640 is a 9 x 7 x 2 inch block of ergonomically sculpted plastic that feels just about indestructible. It has a wide-format 6.5-inch 640 x 240 STN transflective color display that's very readable indoors and outdoors. The 8640 also has a full, albeit small, QWERTY keyboard. Two internal Type II PC Card slots provide expansion for internal radios and other add-ons. The battery is a beefy 15 Watt Hour Li-Ion unit good for two to three shifts. The 8640 comes with 64MB or 128MB of RAM plus 128MB of non-volatile flash. The device carries an impressive IP67 rating which means it is almost completely sealed and impervious to the elements. The 8640 is complemented by a choice of charging and communications docks, and a large variety of communications and scanning options are available.
In March of 2007, DAP Technology merged with JLT Mobile Computers to form Roper Mobile Technology. Prior, both companies had been subsidiaries of Roper Industries, Inc.
